Sustainable Farming
- Oregon’s Willamette Valley can receive upwards of 49 inches of annual rainfall. Hazelnut trees in this valley require much less water than other nut crops. Some of our orchards are not irrigated at all and the ones we do irrigate, are watered with drip tubing that minimizes water usage.
- Self-pollination. Each tree has both the male (catkins) and female (flowers) parts to reproduce, and do not require bees for pollination.
- Hazelnut trees capture carbon and help build organic matter in the soil. When the leaves drop each Fall, the worms do their magic and pull the leaves into the soil.
- Strong root systems and leaf litter throughout the orchard, reduces soil erosion. Hazelnut trees are classified by the USDA and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as a riparian buffer zone species, acting as a natural biofilter that protects aquatic environments from excessive sedimentation, polluted surface runoff and erosion.
Fun Fact
Did you know that Oregon’s Willamette Valley produces 99% of the Unites States hazelnut crop, but only produces about 3.5% of the global hazelnut crop?
